The Pirelli Diablo Wet is a tyre which many riders may have seen others use and we often get asked “do we need some of those?”. There is no one better to explain these to you than our Race Support Manager, James ...
“This tyre is very much an out and out race tyre, in that it has be designed at WSBK level, for use when conditions are not suitable for either a Diablo Superbike Slick or Diablo Rain to be used. This only occurs maybe a handful of times during a race season. The condition this tyre is designed for is when the circuit condition demands a tyre which is capable of providing grip on a drying track, whilst also being able to manage a small amount of standing water and damp patches.” “It is important to understand how this tyre works before you consider buying or using one. It is designed for a DRYING track. Not for when its raining or there is still deep standing water. Essentially it is a slick tyre with grooves in it. This means the tyre creates its grip from HEAT and needs to be kept hot to work properly. With a drying track you are able to create mechanical grip, which this tyre needs and will thrive from. Using a Diablo RAIN tyre when its a drying track can cause the tyre to overheat and it will lose grip, as it is not designed to provide grip at such a high temperature.” “I have won races (many years ago) using these tyres in patchy conditions. I would always see it as a tyre, as a racer, I need to have on a set of wheels as a “just in case” at a race weekend. By many race clubs rules, the race must be declared a wet race for you to be allowed to use these.” “As an experienced wet weather track day rider, these are nice to have as that just in case, but I would still be careful using them in patchy conditions. I would prefer less experienced riders not use these tyres and miss a session, allowing the track to dry out some more.”
All NHS (Not for Highway service) motorcycle tyres are only for pure racing and cannot be used on public roads. Therefore there is no official homologation.
Pirelli continues to stress the importance of the correct tyre pressure setting & tyre warmer strategy to achieve optimum performance and durability over full race distance. If you require help with this, please contact James in No Limits Race Support.
